AUGUST MOVIE RANKINGS

AUGUST MOVIE RANKINGS:

This is quite an odd movie rankings. For one, there are several movies that have gotten past the 92 percentile, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing (don’t think I’m being too generous), it’s just been a good month. It’s hard to believe that most of these reviews were made when I was still enjoying Summer vacation. Time flies by. Anyway, read on and witness who came out on top of August 2015!

august 1

#11- “Tom and Jerry: The Magic Ring”
29%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Pretty good animation and a few parts made me laugh.
Cons: The whole movie is one long chase scene, scenes last too long for their own good, and most of the voice acting is awful.

#10- “Insurgent”
55%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Fantastic special effects, pristine cinematography, great atmosphere, okay acting for some, and some good dialogue.
Cons: Overall acting is bland, most of the story is a throwaway, too many dream sequences, and quite a bit of scenes are ridiculous.

#9- “Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams”
74%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Most of the difficulties of this movie fit the director’s style, good acting, and fun story.
Cons: Unintentionally funny, bad special effects, cheap dialogue (these first three fit the director’s style), the product placement is unbearable, you have to brush off a lot of the nonsense, and the villain is lame.

#8- “Return to Neverland”
75%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Great animation, on point voice acting, okay story, good WWII setting, and Jane is an interesting character.
Cons: Takes a lot from the original, predictable, some aspects of what goes on outside of Neverland could never happen in real life (like Jane running around London while bombs are dropping from the sky), and Peter Pan seems like a jerk.

august 3

#8- “The Grey”
75%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Very good acting, Liam Neeson is great as usual, enjoyable, great special effects, cool action scenes, chilly setting, deep theme, and a rarely used story.
Cons: Predictable, the ending was unsatisfying, unrealistic at times, and I didn’t feel anything for the other characters besides Liam Neeson.

#7- “Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders”
85%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Well-fitting animation, good story, great voice acting, lovable characters, and very funny.
Cons: The music can be off-putting and it is predictable.

august 12

#6- “Ant-Man”
86%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fun, witty, spectacular visual effects and action scenes, good acting, solid story, and funny.
Cons: The villain isn’t intimidating or a good one whatsoever, the movie doesn’t take itself seriously, and I prefer Hank Pym over Scott Lang in terms of a respectable hero.

#5- “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns”
87%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Gritty Gotham, great animation, fantastic Joker, gripping end fight between Batman and Superman, deep overlying themes, interesting story, really good voice acting, and fun characters.
Cons: Can get slow (especially in the first part), the Mutants are a throwaway villain, Superman wasn’t used as much as I wanted, Green Arrow felt randomly thrown in, and Robin is annoying.

august 4

#4- “Lawless”
88%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Great time setting, period piece, amazing performances, great character development, interesting story, and awesome action scenes.
Cons: The story arc pertaining to the Bondurant boys being “immortal” can have its toll on the reality of what happens and the nudity can be overwhelming.

#3- “Pooh’s Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin”
90%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Calming atmosphere, innocent, lovable characters, enjoyable story, deep message, takes me back in time (with memory), very good animation, funny at times, and great voice acting.
Cons: It is aimed directly towards children so there will be silly moments or things to nitpick.

august 5

#2- “Black Sea”
91%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fantastic acting, great CGI, very tense storytelling, varied characters, terrific cinematography, and great theme.
Cons: The beginning felt rushed and the first act of the submarine took a while to shift gears.

#2- “Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)”
91%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Original, extraordinary performances, Michael Keaton is terrific, fresh directing style, understandable, awesome special effects, deep characters, funny, and masterful storytelling.
Cons: The very ending was confusing and some scenes pulled away from the main story arc.

august 6

#1- “Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation”
93%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Killer action, great stunts, good performances, fun characters, well-directed, good story, and an enjoyable experience.
Cons: The villain wasn’t that good, the middle lost traction, and it can get confusing in the heat of the moment.

august 11

Nostalgia Vault Inductee“Balto”
94%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Good animation, an array of great voice acting by famous people, serious for a kids movie, different, and the color tones are exceptional.
Cons: Muk and Luk weren’t really needed in the story, the beginning is slow, and there are minor things to nitpick.

august 7

Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee“Jerry Maguire”
94%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Enjoyable, good-feeling atmosphere, great storytelling, believable performances, characters that you can feel for, funny, good ending, and memorable quotes/scenes.
Cons: Some scenes are prolonged and some parts can drag.

august 10

Nostalgia Vault Inductee“A Goofy Movie”
95%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Funny, really good animation, color contrast is terrific, good story, great characters, some catchy songs, awesome voice acting, and brings back memories.
Cons: Quite a bit of things can be nitpicked and there are hiccups or goofs in the animation (like making eggs disappear in another cut).

august 8

Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee“Nightcrawler”
95%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fresh, amazing acting, beyond creepy, Jake Gyllenhaal is unbelievable, fantastic setting, in-depth characters, creative story, and chilling.
Cons: The ending could’ve been better (although I am fine with how it ended) and it tends to drag in the middle.

august 9

Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee“(500) Days of Summer”
96%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Quirky, great entry for the romance genre, different way of cutting, relatable, fun plot, great acting, funny, unpredictable, and new directing style.
Cons: Some scenes didn’t feel needed.

It’s set in stone! “Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation” is August’s victor and will go up against “The Truman Show,” “Rocky,” “It’s Kind of a Funny Story,” “Rocky Balboa,” “Whiplash” (2014), “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Inside Out,” “Ex Machina,” and the rest of this year’s months in January to decide which film will be declared 2015’s Movie of the Year!
