JANUARY MOVIE RANKINGS:
Another January has passed, and there were some interesting movies to review. It was nice to give my two cents on the “Harry Potter” series and I was finally able to see my anticipated movies like “The Walk” and “The Wicker Man.” Thanks for reading my reviews!
#12- “The Wicker Man” (2006)
34%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Entertaining and hilarious.
Cons: Horrible story, incoherent dialogue, and terrible acting (Nic Cage was entertaining though).
#11- “Last Knights”
58%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Good acting, some cool action scenes, nice scenery and settings, and good cinematography.
Cons: Mediocre story, too much filler, slow in dialogue, takes a long time to start, and is not engaging.
#10- “Hotel Transylvania 2”
75%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Great animation, awesome voice acting, and very funny.
Cons: After the first half the funniness subsides, the second act becomes dull because of how little the main story arc has to offer, and Dracula’s father at the end felt randomly tacked on.
#9- “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”
76%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Cool special effects, good acting, fun adventure, and interesting new character.
Cons: Odd story when compared to the rest, transition shots are repetitive, some editing is rather weird (final shot comes into question), and some outdoor scenes feel fake in backgrounds.
76%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Good acting, entertaining, fun, and pretty good CGI overall.
Cons: The story does not take a scary approach, the plot is bare-boned, and the werewolf character was roughly animated.
#8- “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”
77%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Good special effects, fun characters, entertaining, and good acting.
Cons: Tame story with little to offer in terms of boldness, it can drag, and most of it is a montage.
#7- “Blade Runner”
78%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Interesting concept, good acting overall, fantastic ending, and cool design of the future.
Cons: Deckard and Rachael’s relationship felt forced and some scenes made me feel uncomfortable.
#6- “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1”
85%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: The cinematography and special effects are great, the directing is good, the first thirty minutes are action-packed, and it is entertaining.
Cons: There is an abundance of slow scenes, making the engaging story elements feel strung out.
#6- “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”
85%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fun storyline, great special effects, great acting, entertaining, and nice intro of Voldemort.
Cons: It could have been more enticing when away from the Tri-Wizard Tournament.
#5- “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”
87%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Engaging plotline, another fun adventure, good acting, nice directing, good special effects, and great design in rooms of Hogwarts.
Cons: Repetitive aspects in structure of story when compared to the first film.
#4- “The Walk”
88%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Visually stunning, fantastic directing, great acting, amazing special effects, and great musical score.
Cons: Besides the walk itself the story can be scrambled, Petit’s character doesn’t get deep development besides his passion, and the first act can drag.
#3- “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”
89%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Classic, amazing musical score, good acting, fun adventure, great characters, nice feel, special effects look cool, and Hogwarts looks great.
Cons: The story can be predictable, the ending is cliché, and it can drag.
#2- “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”
90%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Beautiful cinematography, great special effects, awesome acting, funny, dark, and interesting story even though it surrounds a rather bland subject.
Cons: Can drag and one of the last scenes with Dumbledore and Harry felt tacked on.
#1- “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”
91%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Awesome action scenes, entertaining, satisfying end, impactful scenes, great acting, fun conclusion, and great special effects.
Cons: A bit too fast for my taste, having small portions of dialogue.
Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee– “Sicario”
94%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Stellar directing, fantastic cinematography, realistic, amazing acting, deep storytelling, and impactful.
Cons: Some scenes can be predictable and slow.
Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee– “Fight Club”
98%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Original, fantastic acting, amazing cinematography, rich storytelling, and great twist at the end.
Cons: It is not perfect.
Well, I didn’t expect a “Harry Potter” film to make Movie of the Month, but it is what it is. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” will be facing the rest of 2016’s months next January to decide if it has what it takes to become Movie of the Year.
CORRECTION: Because I have altered the Juicy Hall of Fame grading, “Sicario” will share first place with “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.” Sorry for the confusion, but I needed to change the Hall of Fame.
