MARCH MOVIE RANKINGS:
This month has flown by incredibly fast (and I mean it). I have had three marathons which have offered interesting results, and have seen some pretty bad films to round off the month. I hope everyone has found my reviews to be sufficient and I can’t wait to see what this month brings!
#13- “The Ridiculous 6”
50%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Hilarious at times and funny acting.
Cons: Lazy storytelling, hit-or-miss jokes, and almost all of it is filler and unexplained.
65%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Great acting, fun setting, and some interesting scenes.
Cons: The plot goes in several directions, there are many unnecessary scenes, communism is made to look good, and the progression of our characters’ ages are warped.
#11- “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome”
69%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Some good acting, awesome action sequences, Thunderdome is cool, good send-off, and the overarching story with the tribe Max finds is a nice touch.
Cons: The setting in this pushes away from what “Mad Max” for most of the time, the Gyro Captain is back but with no history tied to Max, and most of the scenes in Bartertown (which take up half of the film) are throwaway.
#10- “Mad Max”
76%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fantastic ending, some intense moments, interesting concept, great cinematography, and good acting.
Cons: Does not feel like the future, the first act can be uninteresting, and the story can be rather timid most of the time.
#9- “Don Verdean”
77%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Funny at times, original story, good characters, good acting, and great ending.
Cons: The first half is dull and it can be slow.
#8- “Straight Outta Compton”
78%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Solid performances, fairly good directing, somewhat realistic, and engaging second half.
Cons: The first half was agonizingly slow and boring, and the story was loose for the most part.
#7- “The Dark Knight Rises”
80%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Good characters, great directing, cool action scenes, good musical score, and it has some entertaining moments.
Cons: Several plot holes and stupid scenes, Bane is a weak villain, and Catwoman’s portrayal is not the best.
#6- “Gentlemen Broncos”
86%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Extremely hilarious, original plot, great acting, fun characters, epic adventure, and very weird.
Cons: Too insane to be great (you’d have to watch it to find out).
#5- “The Big Short”
87%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Great writing, funny, good acting, inventive, and informative.
Cons: It can be complicated and we cannot connect to our characters more than their dilemma.
#4- “Black Mass”
89%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fantastic acting, Johnny Depp amazes me, dark story, gritty, intriguing characters, and heavy directing.
Cons: Terribly slow and quite a bit of it feels like filler.
#3- “Room” (2015)
90%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Stellar acting, amazing directing, deep story, and it kept me invested into the characters.
Cons: There were some issues that were not touched on (the woman’s father; the outcome of the kidnapper) and I was not fond of the subject matter.
#2- “The Road Warrior”
93%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Amazing action sequences, cool acting, fun characters, great setting and motivation, and is an overall thrill ride.
Cons: A few crude special effects, the villain of Humongous was not much of a baddie, and the first act was slow.
#1- “Batman Begins”
94%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Nice origin story, brilliant acting, great action scenes, cool villains, good directing, and fun.
Cons: The villains can make the story seem overcrowded and there are some small things to nitpick.
Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee– “Nacho Libre”
97%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Original story, great acting, very funny, cool action scenes in the ring, original directing style, fun music, and memorable.
Cons: A few minor issues.
Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee– “Napoleon Dynamite”
97%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Hilarious, realistic, fun setting, great characters, entertaining, great music, tons of memorable moments, and classic.
Cons: A lot of scenes feel random and inconsequential to the overarching story.
Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee– “The Dark Knight”
98%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Terrific acting, great Joker, awesome directing, several deep themes that give the story weight, amazing musical score and action sequences, and an awe-inspiring superhero film.
Cons: Has some slow parts and Christian Bale’s Batman voice can be a pet peeve.
“Batman Begins” has been crowned March’s Movie of the Month for 2016, but will it win the year? It faces “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” “Sicario,” “The Martian,” and the other months to decide who will be victorious.
