JULY MOVIE RANKINGS:
I’m telling you guys: this is the fastest Summer in the history of Summers. At least in my lifetime. June felt like yesterday, and now we are finishing July. Only fifteen more days until I head off to college, which is nerve-wracking! I hope to continue on with my reviews when I head out, but until then, read on to see who ended up taking July. By the way, this is probably the biggest month, in terms of reviews, that I have ever had on my channel!
59%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Great stop-motion animation and I wasn’t bored in watching it.
Cons: Such a depressing story, with very little to understand or work with. That and puppet nudity (which was odd to see).
#14- “Cars 2”
60%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Amazing animation, funny, good voice acting, and entertaining for the most part.
Cons: The story is made for kids with little to offer for adults, it doesn’t try to be impactful or serious, and it doesn’t amount to the standards of a good animation feature.
#13- “Finding Dory”
69%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Terrific animation, good voice acting, has funny parts, and is entertaining.
Cons: Didn’t convince me it should’ve been made, the ending was silly, not was well-grounded as “Finding Nemo,” and did nothing impactful.
#12- “The Infiltrator”
70%= Burnt Popcorn
Pros: Good acting, cool directing, and it has some great scenes (including the ending and its theme).
Cons: Hard to follow with many characters and conflicts being crammed into the story, and it isn’t as edgy or original as it should be.
#11- “Star Trek Beyond”
75%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Terrific visuals, great action scenes, fun characters, funny, entertaining, and good acting.
Cons: Follows same structure as previous films, highly predictable, and doesn’t have much meat to the story.
#10- “A Bug’s Life”
80%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Good animation (although crude), great voice acting, original story, fun, and an interesting perspective from ants.
Cons: More enjoyable than notable and the plot is rather basic.
80%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Wonderful animation, beautiful design, good voice acting, nice story, and enjoyable.
Cons: Doesn’t have as much of an impact as Pixar movies should in most spots (the flashback of Radiator Springs was good though) and the beginning can be rough to sit through.
81%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Great animation, awesome Scottish background, terrific voice acting, good musical score, entertaining, and funny.
Cons: Feels more like a princess movie than Pixar, there are too many story elements crammed into the plot, and there is hardly any smart male characters in this.
#8- “Kung Fu Panda 3”
82%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Terrific animation and style, great direction, awesome voice acting, fun story, and has some laughs.
Cons: Predictable, the villain was rather weak, and the story was structured just like the others.
#7- “Eddie the Eagle”
86%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Good performances, it has Christopher Walken, entertaining story, great setting, costuming, and it has a musical score that grows on you.
Cons: Familiar story that doesn’t go too far above the typical inspirational movie, and the thick accents can make it hard to understand at times.
#6- “The Book of Eli”
87%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Awesome cinematography and color tones, good acting for the most part, original and cool story, gruesome, focuses on theme of how people can’t survive without God, and great action sequences.
Cons: Can be slow and the ended felt like it carried on for too long.
#5- “Swiss Army Man”
90%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fresh, original, terrific soundtrack, great acting, hilarious, and great visual effects.
Cons: Can get uncomfortable at times, the ending is confusing, and there are some slow moments.
#4- “The Ten Commandments” (1956) (400th review)
91%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Most accurate depiction of the Book of Exodus, fantastic production and costume work, interesting to watch unfold, good acting for the most part, and has a great message.
Cons: A good portion of acting is exaggerated, the visual effects are outdated, and there are some details that have been changed in the story.
#3- “Toy Story 2”
92%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fantastic for a sequel, good animation, great voice acting, funny, has memorable moments, and is highly entertaining.
Cons: Isn’t as impactful as the first film and doesn’t hold much weight whenever they aren’t into their theme.
94%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Stellar animation (for the most part), good musical score, spoke big things without much words, great love story, and it has a dark look into the future.
Cons: The animation of the people look cartoonish when compared to real life pictures and video (which they oddly blend into this) and it is a bit too short.
#1- “Finding Nemo”
95%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Beautiful animation and atmosphere, fun adventure, great storyline, good voice acting, memorable moments, and great lesson for adults and kids.
Cons: Nitpicks and general appeal to me (just in case you are curious why this cons list is shorter than the other Pixar films, yet it only gets a 95%).
#1- “Midnight Special”
95%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Original story, doesn’t spoon feed the plot, great musical score, fantastic performances, engaging, keeps you in the dark, and has a good ending.
Cons: Towards the last thirty minutes the movie loses its punch because the mystery is lost (it happens when loose ends are tied up though) and there was some character development I would’ve liked to see.
Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee– “Ratatouille”
96%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: It feels good to watch, great musical score, wonderful atmosphere, terrific animation, more on an adult level, makes me more appreciative of cooking, and great voice acting.
Cons: Loses steam towards the end of the second act and beginning of third, and it feels like there are some conflicting ideas in some spots.
Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee– “Monsters, Inc.”
97%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Great animation, classic, refreshing plot, original, awesome soundtrack, terrific voice acting, great characters, interesting world, and sad-happy ending.
Cons: Nitpicks, like how Mike got out of the Himalayas.
Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee– “The Indredibles”
98%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Amazing style, legendary musical score, good animation (although crude at times), great take on the superhero genre, cool action scenes, classic, and great voice acting.
Cons: Can get a bit too sugary and cringeworthy at times (like when the family springs into action as a group when Syndrome’s henchmen come in).
Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee– “Up”
98%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Fantastic beginning montage, great musical score and voice acting, awesome animation, original story, touching theme, and enjoyable to watch.
Cons: Nitpicks, like how Russell could have gotten on the porch when it never showed him while the house was lifting off.
Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee– “Toy Story 3”
99%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Brilliant story, proper “send-off” to these characters, funny, tear-jerking, entertaining, great animation and voice acting, and pays homages to first film.
Juicy Hall of Fame Inductee– “Toy Story”
100%= Juicy Popcorn
Pros: Original story, classic, fun adventure, hilarious, there are adult jokes, the whole family can enjoy it, great voice acting, and the animation (although crude) gives this movie its flavor.
Cons: Nothing worth mentioning.
I just noticed how there are many Juicy Hall of Fame inductees. It’s Pixar, what would you expect? Anyway, we have yet another tie for Movie of the Month; those being “Midnight Special” and “Finding Nemo.” They will go up against “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” “Sicario,” “The Martian,” “Batman Begins,” “9,” “Aliens,” and the rest of the months come time of the Juicy Awards to see if it has what it takes to become Movie of the Year!
